Membership for Youth

What about those younger than 18 who are also seekers to learn and practice in a welcoming atmosphere?

Ages 13 - 17

We recognize the importance of acceptance for people of all ages, especially in their spiritual community. It is also important for our community's youth to have an avenue to explore and experience the traditions they may be learning from their family, friends, or as so many of us have, from the plethora of books available nowadays. It is especially important to lend guidance when there is none otherwise available, especially since, as we have all found through the years, not all sources are reputable, whether printed or not.

At Sacred Wind Sanctuary, we have a special provision for the youth who seek to join. First, youth, or "associate", membership does not entail dues for the entirety of the membership. When the associate member turns 18, he or she will then be given the opportunity to sign our adult membership agreement and pay dues to maintain member status. While associate members are not given the ability to vote in matters that would require a membership vote, they are given the other full benefits over non-members, such as reduced or removed requirements for entry donations to festivals.

In order for a prospective young member to be considered, rather than filling out a form, we ask something slightly different. We ask that the seeker write a letter that states who they are, their current experience or learning if any, and why they would like to be a member. This is not an assignment, nor is it meant to be a challenge. Rather, this is meant to help the seeker give real pause and think about themselves, to reflect on their choice and think about what it means to them. The length and exact content of the letter is entirely up to the applicant. Finally, we require the applicant to obtain parental permission to join. This would be something along the lines of a written statement saying "I, ________, Parent/Guardian of _________ give my permission for _________ to become an associate member of Sacred Wind Sanctuary", plus a signature.

We also understand that not every family may be accepting of a belief system that differs from their own. That is an unfortunate reality that many have to learn to deal with in a constructive, non-combative way. We do not encourage the defiance or disobedience to parents or guardians. We DO encourage understanding, on both sides. Family is one of the most important things we as humans can have, and should cherish it. If there are ever questions or concerns, we ALWAYS welcome them, both from those interested in joining and their family.

A special note for parents of those interested in Sacred Wind Sanctuary:
We in no way try to influence or "convert" any individual or group of individuals. Free will is an extremely valued centerpiece of our religions, as is "Do no harm", meaning no harm or influence is EVER allowed against anyone, including oneself. Those who come to us do so of their own volition, and should they choose to leave us, they are also free to do so at any time. We are a tradition that celebrates love and diversity, and respect for all people and all things. We invite you to come to any of our functions to see who we are and what we do. You may do so without providing donation to us for entry at our festivals, just simply let the person covering the entrance know your intent. You are welcome to observe our rituals, or even take part in if you'd like. All we ask is that you be respectful to our congregation, and ask questions during an appropriate time. You may of course ask as many questions as you like, and we will certainly make the time to talk to you about any concerns you have.

Ages 12 and Under

Anyone under the age of 12 should be accompanied by a parent or guardian to any function we hold. There are never any fees or dues ever required for children 12 and under. As such, any membership would be counted under the parent's or guardian's membership. Children are welcome to participate in ritual with the guidance of their parent or guardian, or may enjoy any children's activities we have made available at a festival. When a child reaches age 13, they may proceed as stated above for associate membership.
